Overland’s teen travel trips invite campers to explore new places in small, supportive groups.

Depending on the program, days may include hiking, backpacking, rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, or mountaineering. Thoughtfully planned challenges encourage teamwork, leadership, independence, and self-reliance. “My favorite section of the trip was definitely backpacking…

When we got to the top of the steep uphill on day three the view was stunning and everyone felt so accomplished. We then ate lunch with a picture perfect view!”

“In sending our kids to Overland, our goal was for them to become adventurous, acquire independence, confidence and leadership.

We also wanted them to be exposed to different cultures and experiences which would stretch them beyond their comfort zone.”

“I believe leadership is being able to love and care for all of the team members…

I’ve learned that leadership does not only rest on the “leader.” In a team, we all can and should lead. This summer, I’ll strive to empower and encourage ownership in each and every team member over our summer adventure!”

Which Overland trips are designed for teens?

Overland offers several teen travel trips based on grade level, experience, and readiness for challenge. Explorer trips are designed for students in grades 6-9, Expedition trips serve grades 9-11, and Challenge trips are mainly for grades 10-12. Each trip page includes details about the destination, activities, length, and recommended grade range to help families find the right fit.

Does my teen need previous outdoor experience?

No. Many students join Overland without prior backpacking or outdoor adventure experience. Trips are designed with different levels of challenge, so families can choose an experience that matches their teen’s interests, comfort level, and readiness. Overland provides guidance on preparation, gear, and expectations before each trip.

How does Overland approach safety on teen travel trips?

Safety is built into every part of the Overland experience, from trip planning and leader training to daily decision-making in the field. Leaders complete a careful selection process, receive First Aid and CPR certification, and work with co-leaders and field support teams throughout each trip. Overland also maintains ACA accreditation and regularly reviews its programs.

Can teens bring phones on their trip?

Overland trips are designed to give students a chance to be fully present without everyday digital distractions. Phones brought for travel are collected when students arrive and returned at departure. Students can contact home when they arrive and leave using Overland’s phones, and emergency communication is always available if needed.

How large are Overland trip groups?

Overland keeps groups intentionally small, with no more than 12 students per trip. Smaller groups allow teens to build stronger connections, participate in daily responsibilities, and receive more individual guidance from their leaders. Groups are thoughtfully formed based on factors like age, grade, hometown, and school.
