Yellowstone Teton Adventure: A Closer Look

This fall, Overland began the exciting adventure of opening another office in Bozeman, Montana. Despite our Williamstown, Massachusetts base for the past 40 years, our trip planners were able to familiarize themselves with the Mountain West; they spent each fall scouting new routes, reviewing feedback from families and leaders, and curating itineraries that were adventurous, age-appropriate, and most of all, safe. Trip planning is a science for us, but as the saying goes, there’s no place like home. This new proximity to the greater Yellowstone area has provided new perspective and insight for me in particular, as the trip planner for Yellowstone Teton Adventure.

Due to our close proximity to so many amazing trails, I was able to spend a few weeks this fall scouting out a fantastic new itinerary for Yellowstone Teton Adventure, which has been running in different iterations since 2008. Yellowstone Teton Adventure is available for students currently in 4th-6th grade, and it is the ideal trip for those excited to branch out, learn new skills, and have a whole summer’s worth of experiences in just two weeks! The trip will now begin in Bozeman-Yellowstone International Airport, where students will be met by leaders. Once the whole group has arrived, they will drive down to the West Yellowstone area to begin the trip with four day hikes in Yellowstone National Park. Those first few day hikes help students get settled into the Overland routine and get to know each other through time spent on the trail and in camp. Once they’ve broken in their hiking boots, they will head down to Yellowstone Lake for a nice change of pace, as the group will spend the day flatwater kayaking with Rendezvous River Sports. Professional guides will teach the group the basics of kayaking and lead them through games and activities, segmented by a mid day lunch on an island.

The group’s next focus will be their challenge hike – a time for students to come together to work towards a collective goal and stand on top of one of the most scenic mountains in Yellowstone, with views that span for miles. This hike, while the hardest of the trip, is designed to be achievable and fun, with the hope that students will return home feeling accomplished and proud.

The group will then continue south towards Jackson for a guided nature walk in Grand Teton National Park, an opportunity that makes Yellowstone Teton Adventure incredibly unique! With the help of a professional guide from Teton Science School, the group will work to identify plants, animals, and learn about the history of the areas in which they find themselves. The trip will end with a day-long rafting trip down the Snake River just south of Jackson before heading back to Bozeman for a celebratory dinner the next day.

The new and improved Yellowstone Teton Adventure itinerary provides the perfect mix of challenge and fun for students. They will spend the duration of the trip sleeping in tents in front country campgrounds with running water and bathrooms, learn the basics of cooking and meal preparation alongside their leaders, and experience the allure of one of the world’s most beautiful natural areas firsthand. I may be biased, but Yellowstone Teton Adventure sounds like the perfect summer experience to me!
