Unforgettable Teen Tours

Beyond the Typical Summer Trip

Overland is an experience with lasting value, shaping memories and connections far beyond one summer.

Overland’s teen tours offer immersive summer experiences tailored for grades 9–12. Students embark on multi‑week journeys—from backpacking in the Alps to kayaking in the Pacific Northwest—guided by experienced leaders. Each trip is screen‑free and designed to build confidence, independence and camaraderie. Accredited by the American Camp Association, Overland emphasizes safety, small groups (max 10–12), and holistic growth through outdoor challenges and community living.

“In sending our kids to Overland, our goal was for them to become adventurous, acquire independence, confidence and leadership.

We also wanted them to be exposed to different cultures and experiences which would stretch them beyond their comfort zone.”

“I believe leadership is being able to love and care for all of the team members…

I’ve learned that leadership does not only rest on the “leader.” In a team, we all can and should lead. This summer, I’ll strive to empower and encourage ownership in each and every team member over our summer adventure!”

How does Overland prioritize safety?

At Overland, safety and risk management guide every decision we make—from planning our trips to training our leaders and supporting groups while they’re in the field. While no program can promise absolute safety, and all outdoor activities carry some inherent risk, our goal is to carefully manage the risks within our control. We place a strong emphasis on hiring, training, and supporting exceptional trip leaders—it’s a core reason families have trusted Overland since the 1980s. Click here to learn more about our approach to risk management and our American Camp Association accreditation.

What are Overland’s policies on phones, electronics, and communication?

At Overland, we believe that being fully present helps campers grow. That’s why we don’t allow phone calls, texts, or emails during trips. Instead, your child will call home at the beginning and end of their trip using Overland’s phones, with a leader’s support. If they bring a phone for travel, it will be collected upon arrival and returned at departure.

To minimize distractions, we allow cameras but ask that all other electronics—such as iPods, tablets, or e-readers—be left at home. Any non-camera devices brought to the trip will be mailed home at your expense. Throughout the trip, our leaders stay in close contact with our office. If your child ever needs medical care, we’ll call you right away, explain the situation, and help you connect with the staff or medical provider involved.

How challenging are Overland’s hiking trips?

Overland offers hiking trips for all experience levels, with options tailored to each age group.

Our Adventure trips (grades 4–6) are perfect for beginners, featuring short hikes on gentle terrain with light daypacks. Explorer trips (grades 6–9) introduce longer day hikes, beginner backpacking, and off-trail fun like rafting or kayaking. Expedition trips (grades 9–11) step up the challenge with extended backpacking and added activities such as rock climbing or mountaineering. For the most experienced students, our Challenge trips (grades 10–12) feature the longest hikes and most demanding terrain, offering a true capstone adventure.

How does Overland handle bears and other wildlife?

Traveling in groups naturally helps deter wildlife encounters, and our trips stick to well-traveled areas to minimize risk. We set up camp and store food with care to avoid attracting animals, and in regions where bears are present, our groups carry bear spray as a precaution.

Who are Overland's leaders?

Overland leaders are more than just counselors—they’re inspiring role models who create supportive, welcoming environments where students can thrive. We recruit exceptional staff from top colleges across the country and draw on a strong alumni network to build a deep pool of qualified applicants. Our leaders are talented, compassionate, and fully committed to one goal: helping every student succeed. That dedication has shaped the Overland experience for thousands of students since the beginning.
