As a kid, I was lucky enough to go to summer camp for eight years. Our camp motto—“my own self, at my very best, all the time”—transformed from just a saying on a T-shirt to something I try to embody every single day.
The outdoors gave me a space where I could be myself, away from my suburban home and the pressures of everyday life. While at first, the woods and trails felt like an escape, soon they became home. Summer adventures brought out the best in me. Remembering what it felt like to summit Mt. Katahdin or complete my bike trip around Nova Scotia, makes me work hard here at Overland to give our students the chance to experience that feeling of accomplishment.
After graduating from Wesleyan, I found myself in a sea of liberal arts students searching to find their place in the real world. I felt the pull of adventure and ended up leading a bike trip for Overland on the Pacific Coast. It was an incredibly meaningful, challenging and rewarding summer. To be able to see my group of students grow as people in so many ways—in just one month—was inspiring. After one summer, I knew Overland was a place where I wanted to continue to work.
As a member of the year-round staff, I feel so lucky to work with a dynamic and passionate group of people. We spend all year working towards one goal: make this summer the best one yet. In a way, it’s like I’m coming full circle, because now I have the opportunity to give young people the experiences that were so formative for me. Everyone at Overland is dedicated to giving students the chance to be their own selves, at their very best, all the time.
